Atlas Recycling: Gebäude als Materialressource

Annette Hillebrandt, Petra Riegler-Floors, Anja Rosen, Johanna-Katharina Seggewies

Today, it is less about potential savings and more about ways to keep the immense reserves of raw materials in the building stock “active”. Apart from “sufficiency, consistency and efficiency”, this goal implies the intelligent use of resources, the recyclability of constructions, a circular construction, in short: “urban mining” in the building industry. This requires a change in values and a fundamental rethinking of planning and execution. The great challenge for architects and engineers is not only to convince through aesthetic, economic and socio-cultural qualities, but also to realize buildings that are permanently environmentally compatible to the same extent. Deconstructability and recycling should be firmly established as early as the design stage in order to be able to exploit recycling potential at a later stage. The Recycling Atlas provides the necessary expertise for the associated paradigm shift in building
